With Giants' Ahmad Bradshaw hurt, Brandon Jacobs likely to get extra work he desires

Brandon Jacobs wanted more carries. It seems he’s about to get them because of some bad news on Ahmad Bradshaw.

Tests on Bradshaw’s sore right foot this week revealed yet another stress fracture near one of the screws inserted during a previous surgery to alleviate the same issue.

The Giants running back, who briefly left Sunday’s victory over the Miami Dolphins when he aggravated the issue, has missed the pascheap nfl jerseyst two days of practice and his status for this weekend’s game against the New England Patriots, and beyond, is unclear at this point.

“He’s okay, he’s doing good,” said Jacobs, who is likely to see an increased role even if Bradshaw plays. “We still really don’t know what exactly is wrong with him. I didn’t go into depth, I just felt bad for him. I just wish it could heal and he could get back out there.”

There’s a chance Bradshaw could heal by resting. In fact, someone who recently spoke with the fifth-year veteran said he initially told teammates he expected to miss about two weeks. But the person, who requested anonymity because no public time frame has been set, wasn’t sure whether that prognosis changed after the Giants and Bradshaw spoke with other doctors.

It’s likely the team consulted noted North Carolina-based foot specialist Robert Anderson, who has examined Bradshaw in the past and cleared him to play in 2009.

Bradshaw could also heal through more surgery. But there’s no indication at this point he plans on taking that route, which would probably knock him out for the rest of the season.

And he could play through the issue, as he did in 2009, when he’d take off most of the week and then play on Sundays. He missed only one game and ran for 778 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Giants are hoping such an approach is a possibility this year.

“I don’t know what the determination will be just yet,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Bradshaw has not addressed reporters this week. The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday afternoon he was spotted in the parking lot using a scooter to prop up his right foot. The team gives the device to players with foot injuries so they don’t put pressure on the bone.

“He’s not on the practice field,” Coughlin said, “so as long as he’s not on the practice field, the guys that are practicing are going to go out there and perform as if the responsibility will be theirs.”

“What would be better than the opportunity that he’s going to get now?” offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride asked. “He’s been clamoring for a chance. The chance is here. This is an opportunity. You want to show what you can do.

Veteran back D.J. Ware could see increased reps, though mostly as a third-down back. Rookie Da’Rel Scott impressed against the Patriots in the preseason but has to earn the trust of the coaching staff.

“He’s working hard and that’s the only thing I have noticed,” Coughlin said. “He’s been good in meetings and around the players. Hopefully, he’s been good with you.”
